The Meditation that Changed Everything For Me
I thought bland routines would heal my burnout—until one moment showed me how faith makes all the difference.
You can light another candle, check off another routine, or download another app… but if it doesn’t touch your spirit, it won’t heal your burnout.
You are not burnt out because you’ve done something wrong. Burnout is not a moral failure or a sign of weakness. The truth is that the systems we live in were built to be exploitative. The culture tells you success looks like overwork, exhaustion, and sacrifice. God calls you to a success rooted in faith, purpose, and protection of your body and mind. I’m all for success — but only when it’s defined on your terms and God's terms, not the culture’s. To get there requires a mindset shift.
Because here’s the reality: burnout is a disconnecting force. Even when we are deeply faithful, burnout sneaks in and threatens the very power of our faith. Jesus said true faith could move mountains with just a word. But grinding ourselves into the ground for cultural success is not mountain-moving faith. Faith in action means valuing the body and mind God entrusted to us. It means protecting our hearts, not ignoring them.
Your burnout is proof of that disconnect — between the faith you strive for and the way you’ve been taught to live it out.

When I was burnt out, I felt drained in every way. My body was heavy. My mind was cluttered. I was straining to feel the purpose in what I was doing. I tried to fix it the way everyone tells you to: I downloaded the apps, followed the meditation guides, built routines that promised “wellbeing.” I was desperate, and I know those tools had good evidence behind them, especially mindfulness and meditation. They helped a little. But honestly? They didn’t move me. They felt hollow, like more things to check off. What I needed was something that spoke to my needs as a Christian Black woman — but not many things did. That gap is one of the reasons I do this work now.
One day, I was doing a meditation I enjoyed called "Relax, Ground, and Clear." It was a visualization meditation. I found it relaxing, for sure! But something was missing. So I let myself go into my own tangents in my head. When they encouraged me to ground to the earth, I thought to myself: "On Jesus the Solid Rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand."
When they had me visualize clearing my mind’s concerns into the vast sky, I visualized heaven.
I saw my burdens being lifted for God to receive.
When I was finished and finally opened my eyes, there were tears running down my face. It was such a powerful experience. Not only was it calming in the way that a meditation should be, but I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. I knew from then on I needed to integrate my own spiritual flavor into my mindfulness practice. I wasn’t just relaxing through them — I was enjoying my connection with my God in a deeper way. And I integrated that into my healing journey from then on, unapologetically.
There is biblical and scientific support for why we should do this.
The Bible calls us to:
Renew our minds…
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Take control of our thoughts…
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Focus our minds on positive things…
Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Neuroscience and psychology tell us the same thing in different words: our thought patterns can be reshaped in ways that reduce stress and help us heal from burnout. Every time you interrupt a negative loop or practice a new way of thinking, your brain literally builds new neural pathways. Over time, those pathways make peace and focus more natural than anxiety and overwork. Put together, these truths remind us that when we align faith with proven mindset practices, we don’t just shift our thinking — we experience restoration in both spirit and mind.
You’re here because you are exhausted and overwhelmed.
